For this book, the author speaks about their journey working through trauma from a young age. Eventually, she is able to find the sweetness in life even after something so dark and traumatic. I illustrated a hand painting honey around the page because the author makes lots of references to art in the poems. The honey goes from a dark, bitter honey, then gets lighter and sweeter the closer it is to the hand.
The Sun & Her Flowers talks about the cycle of life considering dark and bright times. The author describes how a flower needs to die in order to bloom again. I illustrated an orchid branch because orchids represent beauty and strength. The branch has spots where flowers are missing showing how some of them died and fell off, one flower that is dying and one that is in full bloom. I referred to ikebana flower arrangements for the composition, in order to get a more intricate feel to the design. Both book covers have an off-white background colour imitating the colour of ceramics to capture that delicacy of ceramics similar to Kaur's poems.
I designed a commemorative stamp to go with the 2 book designs. I illustrated the author in a similar way to the books, while also incorporating elements of the 2 books designs; the flowers and the bees.
